Doors locking with key in the car
Hello,
I have a 2016 A8. Can anyone tell me if I accidentally leave my smart key in the car, get out, close the door and hit the lock button on the outside of the door, will it lock the key inside? Or will it let me know key is inside and not lock? Thank you in advance for your help.

Welcome.
Cannot lock key in car (or trunk) by any normal means. Thus if it refuses to lock on an everyday basis, key is in there somewhere. Again, true of trunk too; useful if you change clothes or something and left key in other pocket. Also true even if you try to use second key when first key is still in vehicle somewhere.

What I hate is that I can't lock the car with the engine running even if I have my keys with me. My BMW didn't have that issue. I like to leave the car running when I go into Starbucks in the morning.

If you have the wallet plastic key type one, that's the third FWIW. My CPO came with all of them. On prior D3 W12 CPO when they couldn't come up with all the keys, they replaced all the missing ones and programmed another extra for me without extra cost; they all have to be redone if any are missing or added.

Do a test. Have someone try and drive off with the car when you have the key in your pocket and 20ft away. I would assume the car will shut itself off as a security measure. Maybe even as soon as it goes into gear. You could start the car in front of your house, bring the key inside and come back out and try and drive off...
I know its archaic buthave you tried to lock the car with the physical key in the drivers door?

What if your key had a dying battery? I doubt it would turn off or prevent operation because it doesn't detect the key. But the test you suggest is the best way to know for sure.

The car will continue to operate even if you take the key into the house and then drive away. Of course if you shut it off you can't restart it without the key.
