@Phil68; I did not find time to investigate how to perform the calibration. Depending on the viewing angle the icon is stretched. For the time being acceptable, so no big deal for me ..
I bought a second hand A6 HUD for €400.
Enclosed and visualization of my ACC image.
PS; I do have a A6 RHD HUD for sale. Model: 4G0 919 604 J (Price €275)

OK, so I have done the same upgrade. It's only taken 3 years and I am not sure I would have persevered but having seen the example I could not resist it.
I managed to source from UK eBay an RHD A7 HUD 4G8919604N. It actually had a damaged top window so managed to get it for £125. As has been said it was tricky to work out how to do the circuit board conversion which is effectively one side of the the HUD and I don't think I would have attempted without knowing there was likely to be a positive outcome.
In the end I did not remove anything other than the HUD trim and then managed to remove the top part of the display - I spent a long time trying unclip the screen surround to provide better access to the screws but in the end I took out the main HUD mounting screws (3) and then lifted the unit to take out the screen mounting screws (4) all very fiddly. With the display panel removed it is possible to rotate the unit to remove the PCB. Transferring the circuit board is fiddly not easy especially the ribbon cable. Did a basic test to make sure the PCB was working and all was well.
Rebuild is actually much more straighforward as the display surround can be left off until the last moment making it much easier to refit the screws. Not sure about calibration yet but I the security code works fine.
Programming was straight forward and I can confirm speed limit display also works using the bit settings already posted. If you have ACC you need bit 6 set rather than 5 which is for Cruise. Left 3 and 7 unchecked and no errors.
Very very happy especially as Audi refunded the cost of the Hud as I said it was not the same as the brochure (which it isn't)
Thoroughly recommend the upgrade if you can source the replacement HUD cheaply enough. Sorry about the wobbly pic not easy to capture!

I do really think about it but the post of wanman with the description of how fiddly the disassembly was, makes me hesitating. If the A6 HUD would have the motor RPM displayed (which I really miss when driving more racily), I would do it. But so, I probably will not — the prices for the HUD's on eBay moving around € 500-800.- (not even new, but slightly scratched) and taking into consideration damaging something while changing the HUD — is not worth it for me. Thanks @ mm.drachten and @ wanman anyway for your detailed information posts!
