Android Auto is different from Apple CarPlay. In my 2019, AA requires a wired connection to the phone. Later models have wireless AA.

My HUD has a mini-map that works with MMI but not carplay.

Same with AA. It's one reason to 'use' the factory navigation system but in any event I 'have' to use Waze as I speed all the time

on my 2021 Arteon there was an update that allowed Apple Maps through CarPlay onto the dashboard map. I wonder with the newer hardware (I know there was a minor revision) that CarPlay Apple Map shows up on dashboard and/or HUD on 2021/22/23 A/S8
