Yeah, that's a quirk about Audi and takes away a bit of the exclusivity. I think there should be some differences in looks between those models not just size. Given the price difference on an S8 No one should mistake it for any other model.
I remember when my buddy was buying an S7. He hated the silver mirrors and went as far to tell the dealer no deal if it had silver mirrors. Took me two weeks to convince him that the mirrors were part of the exclusitivity. He finally changed his mind and is now proud when he sees an A7, knowing that his car stands out

Car And Driver S8 Test
Car and Driver just did an instrumented test of the 2020 S8: https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...y-the-numbers/
Some of the acceleration tests are slower than the 2016 S8: https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...o-test-review/
Most puzzling though are the 30-50 and 50-70 acceleration tests.
2016: 30 -50 1.9 sec. 50-70 2.1 sec.
2020: 30-50 3.2 sec 50-70 3.1 sec
The 2016's times rival the Corvette Z06 while the 2020's times are slower than most average sports sedans. What gives?

That is puzzling it is almost like they hit the kickdown in 2016 or I don't know if maybe the gear ratios/final drive are very different between years. (But I doubt that.)

The S8 Plus, starting in 2016, had a overboost mode that significantly boosted power at WOT. I haven’t seen any mention of overboost on the D5 S8’s, but , to tell the truth, I haven’t paid much attention to the D5 details because I’m so happy with my D4 Plus. Mike

I know weight has to be part of the issue. The 2016 was a svelte 4600lbs and the 2020 is now 5250lbs! (Assuming mild hybrid and active suspension account for much of that new weight.)

Granted, but even with the '16's extra 40 HP the '20 spec's about 40 lb-ft. more torque than the older plus model which I would think would be more useful in a top gear acceleration test. If everything else was equal.

getting back to the overboost on the Plus, it’s like an explosion when it kicks in, but I suppose the laws of physics point to the weight difference being the culprit. I forget the precise parameters of overboost, but IIRC it kicks in above a specific RPM, so initial acceleration in a 0-60 test wouldn’t be helped, whereas a rolling start acceleration is probably in the sweet spot.
I went back and looked at the C&D articles, and the 2020 S8 is .1 second quicker to 60 than the Plus, but the Plus pulls away from the 2020 above 60. I notice that the braking is a little better for the Plus, which I assume is primarily a function of weight also, but the D5 seems to overcome the extra weight on the skid pad.

wow, I didn’t realize how much of a weight gain took place. And to think I was complaining about my D4 jumping by about 400 lbs over my D3!
