1997 A6 headlamp (bulb only) replacement???
OK, I'm not a dummy but I'm also no mechanic. Thought it would be simple to change the burnt bulb in my passenger side headlamp. So, I get a 12V 55W replacement halogen bulb, follow the instructions in the owners manual, but can't seem to get the old bulb (glass & metal) out of the little plastic cylindrical "L" shaped thing. So my questions are: do I need to replace the small black plastic "L" that the wires plug into (it says "sylvania" on it), and if not - how the heck do I get the bulb out. Plyers don't seem to work and it isn't obvious which way it twists...

if you mean the low beam H1 ...
... you need to squeeze together the two metal clips and push them inward slightly to remove from back of bulb. The black connector pulls right off the back end of the bulb. With clip removed, the bulb should come right out.

if that picture is the bulb you are replacing ...
... then its the high beam 9005, not the low beam H1. The 9005 has an L shaped base on it; the H1 does not. If yours is like my 97A6, the bulbs are:
H1 = low
9005 = high
H3 = fog
H1 = low
9005 = high
H3 = fog

not likely
9005 has single filament.
9004 has dual filament for high and low beam for single head light configuration. My '88 911 has 9005 bulbs. I suppose it would be possible to use a 9004 for a low beam, but which filament would it use? It could not use both at once because that would generate too much heat and load on wires (>120w).

The '97 runs high and low beams together...1tall brunette read on...
Only the fogs are switched on and off with the high beams. I have been running 60+100x2=320w for two years with no heat or wiring problem. Beep-beep means 9005 and 9006. He's just confused. As for the question of the day, the H1 low beams are a pain in the ***, but just clip in. The 9005 (HB3) light slips into a keyway and unlocks by turning about a quarter turn counterclockwise. Check here to see what they look like.
