Default 1998 Avant dies at random, will restart 15+/- minutes later.

The car dies at random. It can happen five times in a row, then not happen again for weeks. Ignition switch and fuel pump have been replaced. Any thoughts?

Default Is it dying while idling or running at speed? If idling, then probably the idling stabilization...

valve (ISV) that is plugged.

Default I would think that would make it stall, but it should restart immediately, right?

The car runs perfectly at all other times. I haven't experienced the issue personally, unfortunately. When I drive the car, everything is fine. I think this can happen at speed. The dies, won't restart, wait a few minutes and try again, maybe it starts, maybe you need to wait a litle more.

It's like something is getting hot.

Default Then I'd scan the ECM & check for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), & perform a log of...

the MAF output and the other sensors. I agree w/ you if the ISV was the problem, then it would start right up. So, there must be another sensor(s) that is/are causing the problem. Some things come to mind:

* Low fuel pressure after running - possibly the pressure relief valve on the fuel rail or fule pump.

* Cam positioning sensor malfunctioning resulting from heating up after running, resulting in a non-signal to fire the plugs.

* Ignition coil malfunctioning from heating up, then loosing its charge.

Default Nothing of use in the ECM. I think I need to look at the trans control unit to see if it has codes.

Might give me an idea of what is happening with the ECU. Thanks for the suggestions!

The unfortunate part is that I have not actually experienced this problem, and I have is my (female) friend's acute observations. "It just died"

Default I had a same problem with my A8. It stalled randomly, but mostly when I turned.

It was the engine speed sensor wire. It was too close to the exhaust and the insulation melted. Every time I've turned, the wire was touching the exhaust pipe and stall the engine.
I had engine speed sensor fault code.
