part # 078 905 381. Ignition timing sensor. I'm assuming this is the piece that's causing my car to not start (no spark). I did not get a DTC for this though. How do I get the blink codes? Test light between A and D, right?
There's also a supposed "gray" sensor with part # 078 905 375 or something like that. I don't see that one anywhere on my car.
How do I test this piece?

It looks similar to the sensor part of an abs wheel speed sensor. They also have a small ground area on the face and they seem to be made that way.
To test it, I am not sure. I would guess it is able to pick up a very small induced current when the slot in the crank passes it. You could test it simply with a sensitive test meter on DC voltage then pass the shaft of a screwdriver past it. You may see a very small deflection on the meter. But I am only guessing and even if it does, that does not say it is going to be good in the car.
I can only say I have not seen a problem with one and so if it does seem to work, then at leats you will know the wiring to it is good.

That looks like the dead center sensor that you are suppossed to remove during a timing belt job...
Right? Driver side, just in back of oil pan? Doubt if it got hurt during the timing belt swap. That is where you insert the crankshaft locking pin to keep the engine at TDC during the timing belt swap.
Can I assume when the timing mark on the crankshaft is at 0 degrees the cam sprockets on your heads have two holes parallel to the ground and the inboard holes are smaller than the outboard holes? At least I think the inboard holes are the small ones.
I know you keep saying the timing is correct but the car ran before the belt swap did't it?
Oh, wave a magnet over that sensor if you want to see a voltage output.

The bigger holes are in the middle when "supposedly" at TDC...
I didn't put any pin through that hole while doing TB swap. The instructions (I think were from MikTip) didn't say to. How come there is no spark?
I could use some help here at my house. Another pair of eyes is extremely useful. I'm in Kent, near Seattle.

Seattle Scott is the man. He's been in there and knows this stuff pretty well,
I assume that he's in the Seattle area. I'm an idiot, I'm editing having just discovered that Seattle Scott has returned to the forum. Wish I were closer. If your valve timing was off, it would be obvious. If the crank mark is on TDC mark and the holes in the plates are all aligned on a plane, then it is spot on. I agree that it's something easy. Is your coil wire plugged in? Is there even a coil?
