Default Converter alternatives....

Ok well my repair guy said that my right cat converter is definatley shot. However he recommends replacing both of them. I see that prices range from 1200 each form Audi to around 500 each from Blaufergnugen. I have seen universal high flow performance cats for 99-149 each. My A6 has over 155,000 miles on it and i really dont want to spend over 3 grand at the dealer. what are your thoughts about getting these high flow aftermarket ones. Also, how big is my pipe in and out of each cat. i Can get anywhere between 1 3/4 to 3 1/2 inch pipe. thanks again!

Well this place sells aftermarket performance cats.. they have a high flow system and they work on engines up to 5.9 litres! this means that this thing much have some good flow... now think of this... if we have 2 of them that means only 1.4 litres of exaust capacity go through something that can handle up to 5.9.. that will leave us with very little restriciton. I wonder if that will give up 5 or 6 more HP? The car goes in on friday and ill keep you posted on what happens. This site sayd 10% increase in HP and 15% torque.. who are they kidding as well as saying 10%increase in Fuel ecomony.. im not so sure but im in need that they are aboue 1100 dollars cheeper EACH!

http://www.catalyticconverters.net/catalyticconverters.htm</a

Default Here are some options

Well, first I would check to see if the recall on the driver cat has been performed on your vehicle. (if there was a recall on your model)

Second, there is a site, discountconverter.com where you can get converters for $300 that are direct fit to our cars.

Third, you replace the cat with a straight pipe, something we already talked about in the 90 forum, people on either side of the fence for that one.

4th. You just get universal cats welded in place of your oem's, and that should run you no more that $120 each side, with pipe and cat included.

I've seen this done many times, and make sure to reuse the factory downpipe as the steel replacement piping usually rusts like a mother. Stainless would be perfect, just for that section.

5th. Someone I know has a set of good 100 manual and 100 automatic cats. Both in nice shape. $175 for both, probably about $25 for shipping.

options options options.

Default Well i would assume that audi has the 2 banks separated at the cats for a reason.

I will have the final verdict on friday.

Jack: are you going w/Extreme Flow cats? I just received E from them-#xf605's for $99ea. w/free installation kit. My local exhaust guy is pretty good, reasonable about my Audis. As long as it's cash w/no receipt. Let us know how yours turns out. I'm probably going to try them. For the price it's hard not to. I was wondering...has anyone tried any of the aftermarket cats suggested (discountconverter.com, etc.)? are they actually a direct fit, or will substantial welding be necessary?
