Default Coolant leak !!!

I have this coolant leak which takes place when
pressure builds up....All I can say it leaks on the transmission and smells.

The only time I know it leaks is from the smell,
sometimes puddles of coolant (not always) and coolant level in the expansion tank.

So I take it to the mechanic...and he tells me he took a mirror underneath and tigthened some seals...and gave me the car back....

Now for 10-15 days everything is fine....suddenly after that the same thing happens all over again...level drops, puddle sometimes and smell....

I take it again back to him and now he says its the heater core which needs replacing and the labor cost $750 and part around $160

Now from what I have been reading... it looks like when heater core leaks... coolant leaks from the vents within the car and there is coolant smell within the car....

I have coolant smell only when I step out...and no coolant leaks within.....

Any inputs will be appreciated... thnks.

Default Places to check

the coolant tank maybe its cracked or the hose has a small hole that opens under pressure
the hoses under the plenun that goes to the heater core
the pipe at the rear of the head and the sensors that are located on that pipe..

I think if it was the heater core it smell all the time inside especially.
next time there is a puddle note the location and what part of the engine is above you should be able to see a water trail if you look hard enough..

I would suspect that one of the rubber hoses has a small hole

Default Re: Places to check

It looks like somewhere above the transmission and near the fire wall.

Default One of the necks for the heater core could........

be broken. This is where the coolant hoses connect near the firewall. You most likely would not smell coolant inside the vehicle if there is a problem at either neck. So the mechanic may be right. When coolant and the strong smell of coolant come through the vents that is an indication that the actual heater core itself has busted...and no coolant would be dripping underneath the vehicle.
