Default Ever have one of those projects that lingers on forever? I finished one of those this weekend!

OK, not completely finished, but so close I can taste it. Last Fall old Farmer Larson backed his big Ford F-something-50 into my 92 100 CS and killed both driver's side doors. EuroVan5150 sent me a couple of beautiful gold door shells that I eventually got around to painting white. This weekend I finally made the switch. All I have left to do is slap the door mouldings back on....about 10 minutes of work, I figure.

I took the time to solder and tape some of the broken wires in the harness while they were all exposed.

Anybody care to venture a guess why I had to cut the triangular holes in the old shells?

There's Edigreg's pearl hood hanging out, waiting for it's big trip to Pittsburgh...anybody heading that way thru Salt Lake?

Default I know the feeling, my whole car ('90 20v 90q) is a project.

You have to watch out for those crazy Larson's. I would know, I am one! Looks great, your pearl is in a lot better shape than mine.

Default Looks nice Dave!

You've got me in suspense as to what the triangles are for! I noticed you've got A6 seats and fuse panel covers though

Default Driver's seat is from a 96 A6...another one of those 'projects'

that hasn't quite been finished. My intent was to install heated seats and replace the worn driver's seat all in one go.

The wiring harness, switches, and one seat are all in. The one test I did to see if the heater worked bombed. I either need a better power supply, have a bad switch, or have a heated seat with bad heaters. It's time to get out the multimeter and track down the problem....after I make respectable progress on finishing the downstairs bathrooom and starting the wife's landscaping-pond-arbor-bench vision in that ratty looking corner of our back yard.

I don't know anything about the fuse covers....have never looked that closely. Maybe the PO 'upgraded'. Show me a pic of yours that shows the difference.

Triagular holes....I'll wait til tomorrow to divulge their purpose.

Default My 100 fuse panels had Airbag warnings and the A6 ones I have now do not.

Default Thanks Gary. After finishing 3 body work projects now I have a whole new appreciation for the pros

and a pretty good understanding of where they can cut corners. For YEARS I've shied away from projects that needed body work, but I got talked into taking an evening autobody repair class by a coworker who has restored some SWEET old MGs and is in the process of restoring a 67 MGB with his son.

Long story short, I repaired a little rust spot on a 94 Jag and repainted the rear quarter panel, fixed some rust around the windshield on a Camry project, and have now painted these Audi doors. Body work and painting is fun and practical, but in every one of my projects I can point out half dozen flaws that drive a perfectionist like myself completely insane.

The pros who can do it right and make guys like me happy are far and few between...and earn every $$ they charge. The hacks who do half-assed work similar to my amateur efforts deserve all the flak they get.

In the case of this 92 100, I got a nice insurance check and spend a fraction of it by doing the work myself. The small and barely noticeable flaws in these 2 doors essentially match the rest of the dinged-up and touch-up-painted car. In fact, the doors are so shiny with their new clear coat that I'm thinking of finding some way to 'dull 'em down' a bit.

It's funny how your perspective on a car changes when you let go of the apron strings and decide it's time to sell it. The 97 A6 Q I bought a few months ago has really grown on me, to the point I'm ready to let it replace the 92 100. The 92 was my first Audi and firmly set the hook. And here I thought I was a diehard Saab fan all these years....

New career? Likely not unless the economy goes to sheit. My current business card tells me I'm an environmental engineer. I like the people I work with, the clients I deal with, and the opportunity to solve 'new' problems every week. But there IS something satisfying about turning out a shiny, slick product like those white Audi doors. I'll probably keep it as a hobby and savor it.....

Damn! Have I been drinking again and getting all philosophical?

That's a '94 thing, my '93 is "normal".
