Default Hi and problem 1, Rear tranny seal in 96 Avant Quattro.

Hi everyone I have had my car for about a month now and well have run into my first problem.

I have a burnning smell after driveing and a black goop on my cats.

I have read on here of the "rear tranny seal" is the area that needs adressing. I am takeing it to an independent Audi shop durring a lunch break, and just want alittle more insite on what to tell the guy to look for. So is this what its called or is it called something else. Also whats the cost going to run about. Thanks

Default Re: That smells like the rear tranny seal to me...

I paid $300 from a indy wrench in south Denver about a month ago.

Any competent Audi wrench should know what and where to look.

The write-up for the procedure for the A8 (similar to the A6) is on audipages.com

The pearl white color is a comon one it seems.

4cornersCurt your car looks exactly like mine. I have clearcorners to and mines pearl white. The only thing yu have is the nicer 5 spoke wheels, I have the 8 spoke ones.

austinado you have my car to. I love that pearl white, and black leather combo.

Thanks for the help guys, I don't know but where exactly is the plug to check the fluid. I am no sure when I can get it fixed but at the mean time I would like to keep an eye on the fluid levle and top it of.

Default Checking transmission fluid level

I'm not sure how it is on your car, but my '95 Quattro has a side fill plug on the passenger side of the transmission pan. The book says the car much be level and the transmission fluid up to a certain tempurature before checking.

So, the fluid level needs to be to the bottom of the side fill hole.

My car has the "ecru" (light tan) leather interior, which I really like, especially during the summer.

Default If your rear diff is leaking it's 75W90 gear oil, NOT ATF. No way to check, you fill until...

it spills out the hole. The tranny fluid is the same thing, no dipstick on our cars (earlier 100s have one I believe)you just fill until it comes out. It must be done at the correct temp though, consult a Bentley or search the archives for the proper temp. Not doing so will cause over or underfilling.
Someone managed to fill their center diff without removing the cats, quite a feat but it's in the archives somewhere with pics. Good luck.
