Hub Shark - Anyone have one for sale or rent near Chicago?
#4
They are $300-$400 Unless you have a **** load of cars w/ bad bearings, buying one doesn't seem
worth it. If you could borrow one, sure. I dont know anyone who rents them though. And if someone does rent them, they probably charge between $50 and $75. Plus you'll still have to get the half shaft out. Bottom line, if your that far into it, a couple more bolts and the whole strut assembly comes out anyway. I could justify the price and small time savings, if your a shop or mobile mech. But it still stands, the cheapest way is to buy a bearing off E-bay for $30 and take the assembly to a machime shop and have it pressed for an additional $30. That is unless you love pain. I'm sure everyone here has went to do a simple R&R of some part that should take 20 mins only to run into bull**** and have it take 20 hours. Bottom line, I'm not trying to discourage you. But unless this is a second car you can get to whenever, then I think your gonna find the time and expense of doing the whole job yourself not worth while. Maybe I'm just getting old, or maybe I have fixed way too many Audis, but some headaches to me are just worth paying for these days. A front wheel bearing definately being one. Call for more estimates. Try goodyear. They did mine on my old A6 for $186.00 Parts and Labor
Good luck and let me know how it turn out either way.
