Thermostat Replacement
Hi
I've searched the site and followed all the links but I still haven't found a step by step guide to replacing the thermostat on a 2.8 without removing the timing belt etc. Has anyone got another link or source that is valid?

Re: Thermostat Replacement
Bentley (vol 1, B19-5) show a picture of how to replace it, but it does say you need to remove the belt. My local dealer replaced my thermostat today, without removing the timing belt, so it can be done.

I was alluding to the fact that...
...you're better off removing the timing belt to replace it. It's easier to do this way!!
It can PHYSICALLY be done with the timing belt on but it is difficult. It's very possible for the belt to slip a cog and ruin your engine on start-up if you're not careful.
I assume you are trying to figure this out because you don't know how to deal with the timing belt. If that is the case you should not even touch the thermostat (timing belt on or off)!!
My $0.02!!

Yeah, i agree, someone just mentioned they took it to a dealer and had them do the t-stat for $230. I would take it to a euro mech and have them do it for say maybe $175 if you are lucky. It's worth it if you ask me, one screw up with the timing-belt and you are screwed. If you aren't good with this kind of thing take it to a mechanic and give yourself some peice of mind.

V6 timing belt is "pie"! ;O)
Remove serpentine belt-Pie! ;O)
Remove the plastic covers! Pie! ;O)
<img src="http://home.ec.rr.com/miktip/tbelt3.jpg" border="0">
The t-belt almost touches the thermostat housing! ;o0
The "special tools" increase your confidance level considerably! ;O)
<img src="http://home.ec.rr.com/miktip/tbelt4.jpg" border="0">
Plus the special tools do not allow anything to move! ;O)
<img src="http://home.ec.rr.com/miktip/tbelt1.jpg" border="0">
Removing the t-belt, does allow thermostat R&R to
be much "easier"! Especially if you have to scrape gasket material off the block! BTDT! ;o)
Its like any other "job". Looks tough at first, then you tackle it, and your amazed at how simple it was! ;O)

Re: V6 timing belt is "pie"! ;O)
I've done timeing belts on other cars before, and water pumps and thermostats. I just can't afford the time and/or the money to get into a job this big at this time. So the quick and dirty answer is that it's not simple to replace the thermostat.
