What is this hose? as seen on Jerzey's new car...

Re: Secondary Air Injection, can this car be switched over to a cold air intake.
I would like to put a K&N cold air intake on this car instead of just a K&N filter. But with having this secondary thing would I run into any problems or they total unrelated?

We were just discussing this (for the umpteenth time) so look back a couple weeks and you'll see where a link was posted to a guy's flow bench test of air filters.
Turns out, because of our restrictive throttle bodies, and MAF's, we're maybe able to move 250ish cubic feet of air per minute (cfm). The bone stock Audi filter, and Mann filters move about 700something cfm, as did the K&N.
The ongoing debate is that K&N flows better, but at the sacrafice of letting more dirt pass. Meanwhile, the bone stock filter lets almost exactly the same amount of air....which is over double what the engine is capable of breathing... and it does so with 100% correct filtration.
The other ongoing debate is whether the oil in the K&N filter is getting on the wire in the MAF and causing MAF failure, or poor running once the wire gets coated with oil.
That being said, I ran a K&N for the last 25,000mi and just switched back to an OEM filter. There were/are a lot of knowledgeable guys here saying K&N was not a good choice, and I decided it was time to listen.

No, the two diverter (or combination) valves receive the air from the pump, and supply..
it to the exhaust manifold. I believe the hose in the photo is the line coming from the pump to the combination valves. If you don't have these parts, then your AFC engine doesn't have the secondary air injection (AIR) system, which was first introduced with MMS 411. In kday's photo that he posted above, you can see the combination valves with the hose from the air pump. I'm not sure why you wouldn't have this on your '97 A6s since the AIR was brought on-line in the late '96 A6s (as evidenced by changeover to the black thermoplastic valve covers).

The plastic valve covers came before the air injection.
I have a 96 motor with plastic covers and no air, and a 97 motor with both.
