Default Doh! Flange at cat/rear muffler piping rusted thru, car is loud now.

87 4000CS Quattro -
The car is reg'ed in Florida (no emissions), so I'm thinking of eliminating the cat (do they make test pipes for these cars?). I need a complete new exhaust, as the rear muffler is on the fringe of falling apart, too.

What are my options? Take it to an exhaust shop and put a cat and exhaust on it, or DIY?

The car is +200k miles, so nothing pricey but maybe something that sounds nice.

Default Test pipes

I found what looks like a cat delete pipe for the UR-Quattros in ETKA the other day. Part # 857 253 301. Might fit the 4000..

Default Yankee Repair recommendation

We New Englanders are known to be cheap. Try snipping a soda can to get a nice square piece of aluminum and then take a 3 inch hose clamp to fit it over that rusty spot. bada bing, instant repair. Next best choice is to replace the center pipe or rear muffler (which ever has the rusted pipe). Lots of posts on custom muffler jobs - but I think you'd be best off sticking to stock products. I'd avoid not using a cat since you still need to put the O2 Sensor somewhere.

Default Youch. Just talked to Midas, $1300 to replace exhaust. Uhm, no.

So I asked if they would just spot weld something over the flange, they said maybe.

and.. It isnt the pipe so much as the flange... So I'd have to weld a new flange on.

Default Re: Test pipes

Actually its not a test pipe.
In europe, pre 86 (or was it later) there was no unleaded fuel commercially available.
When we got our car 85 CGT as a European pick-up it had no cat. At the Dealership we saw them take out the straight pipe and put in the cat. They drained the fuel tank and filled her up with unleaded,, just enough to get to the boat.

Somewhere there's a 2-piece 3 hole flange for this sort of repair...

Default Well, not too far off - a diet coke can, some flex-pipe, and a few clamps (sans cat now) is it.

Come to find out, my brothers neighbor runs the exhaust shop that I called and said $1300. He walked over when I was working on my car (at my brothers place), and offered some advice on my half-*** job, and said to bring it by the shop and he'd weld up a pipe where the cat used to be.

Also, I took the cat off, and it was already gutted. Heh...
