Default Are Hella 500 Driving lights legal?

Are they legal for on road use, I know you wouldnt want to leave them on all the time, and blind people. I was wondering if its legal to use them as brights, as I know some type of bulbs are only legal for off road use. Just wondering cause im on driving probation for a couple of nasty tickets I got, and I dont want to get in anymore brushes with the law for the next 5 months.

Most states have a limit of 2 auxilliary lights on the vehicle. They need to be dipped as high beams do. And, many states limit you to 55W bulbs.

SCCA requires for Pro-Rally, that they be hooked with the high beams, so they dip at the same time.

That said, if you keep cool, you avoid getting hassled. I have yet to have a problem with mine.

Default Not usually

That was at a show.

They block too much air, and the motor runs hot, with them on. Also, I don't want them to get broken.

Make sure to do other driver's a favor and wire them to be switched with the high beams. As long as you dim your high beams for oncoming traffic I don't see why you would get in trouble.

Technically they are for off-road use only (not DOT approved). However, I've had the 500's, 550's, and even some 4000's on my car(s) for the last 8 years or so and I've never had a problem. Just be courteous with them.

Default Hell, I just leave the brights on all the time.

My brights on my car are dimmer than the low beams on our van and civic. I really need to get better bulbs.

Default When I lived in Omaha...

I didn't have a problem with them on the car concerning law enforcement. They do have to be wired to the high beams. Here in VA, whenever you go in for inspection they require a 'cover' over any driving lights, so I just duct tape them.
