I've heard good things about this stuff:

http://www.theworkscleans.com/toiletcleaner.html

Just dump a couple bottles in and let it work for half an hour, shaking it up periodically. Then wash it out with dish soap and hot water. Once it's clean, spray WD-40 in to keep it from starting to rust again before you can fill it with gas (which you should do as soon as possible).

You could also put a sealer in it, but I've read a few cases of that stuff coming off and clogging up the fuel system, so I'd research that heavily.

That sounds promising. I've also read on a couple of other forums where guys used CLR. Seems like any rust remover would work. My theory is that the sludge that was in my tank was clogging the screen and restricting the fuel flow. Since the engine only bucked and surged with less than 5 gallons in the tank, I think a full tank diluted the sludge enough to keep it from clogging. Also both tubes on the bottom of the tank, feed and return, were VERY corroded with the same sludge and rust. It's my only working theory right now, but it makes sense in my head.

Rog you are the man! That stuff worked perfect. The pic is a bit hard to see because of the WD40 fog inside the tank, but you can still see a difference. That metal started to flash rust as soon as I rinsed it out, so I had to fog it with WD40 right away. I'm anxious to put it back in the car and test it.

Nice! I love those cheap and easy fixes. I imagine that will go a long way toward getting your fuel system back to where it should be.

Yeah without that sludge and rust clogging up the screen in my tank, I'm betting I will get the fuel flow I need. I've been getting the pressure, but not the flow. I'm gonna put it in this weekend and definitely post an update.

Well I'm very hopeful it fixed the problem. I put 3.5 gal of gas in the tank, which is less than it had when it first died on me, and drove it pretty hard today. No bucking, surging, or weird sounds from the pump. Plus I'm not stuck at the side of the road, so I would say that's a big improvement. Thanks all for the help. Keeping my fingers crossed!
