Im diving in head first...
Dirty pistons bad.

Clean pistons good.

Once school gets out next week I'll have lots more time to mess around and clean things up really well. Planning on getting the block as clean as possible, then spraying it with paint, not sure what color yet, though.
The pistons look pretty good, definately not prefect though. Since the car ran awesome before the motor was pulled, Im taking the chance with a "no rebuild" swap.
I should have this thing all painted in a few weeks, and then it will be ready to accept all new tuneup components, headstuds, the head, and all that other junk.
BUT, Im going to need some parts. Does ANYBODY have a spare JT/KX oil pan and oil pickup tube? I need to swap these over from my car, but would love to have a spare set so I can get the bottom end all buttoned up.

Dirty pistons GOOD!
My old mechanic buddy races Heavy Street Bracket class, he has a 69 dodge Dart with a 440cui, and he said that every year when he rebuilds his engine, he'll put pits all over the head and piston faces. He just uses a punch to make the little pits.
He said these little pits encourage the build up of carbon. More carbon build up means less area in the combustion chamber. Which will increase the compression ratio a little.
Not too sure how well this would work on a street car. But neat little trick nonetheless.

Carbon buildup = BAD
That carbon will start to glow red hot and cause Pre-Ignition (PING). This causes the fuel to combust too early in the stroke, robbing the engine of power and can also cause damage to your engine if it's severe enough. Basically, I think your friend is an idiot- the only time that MIGHT be good is on a diesel engine.
