OK, how the heck is this tiny bolt supposed to keep the idler pully on the block?

That doesn't look like the right bolt. I'm pretty sure it's much longer than that

IIRC that bolt is supposed to be around two and one half inches long.

Yeah, that looks like one of the lower timing belt cover bolts.

Default Cool! That's the bolt that came off...how this engine stayed together before I got it is a mystery.

When I pulled the harmonic balancer it was missing a toothed belt pully bolt. Then I went to remove the 258 ft lb bolt. I gear up for some major leverage with all my might and fell to the ground...it was no more than 20 ft lb.

Sheesh...this car is lucky it found me in time or it would have self destructed. Maybe it just didn't want to live anymore since no one loved it....it's ok baby, Daddy will take care of you ;-)

I think my 80q is jeleous of all the attention the CGT has been getting. But my S4 is actually behaving...it see's all the wrenches and knows it better behave or I'm going to tear it a part and curse the Audi engineers (which has happend many times before with that car).

Don't know how that happened. That's the part number for most, if not all I5's

Default I think its supposed to be like that...

I got the autohausaz idler here for my future timing belt job, its the same part thats on the car. The P/N engraved on the face is F-220096.01. The boxtop is labelled 55401 along with a sticker with the Audi P/N.

I don't think the bolt that goes through the idler actually threads into it. Its a long skinny bolt (M6x62mm) that threads into the block itself. The idler is a generic part with other applications that might actually use those threads, just not on an Audi.
