Default Overhauling '87 4KQ -- need advice

There's approx 150k miles on it. I have had it since new. Want to ensure it's reliable for my wife's daily driver, including a once-weekly 200 mile round trip commute.

The clutch is original - no slippage at all. Uses no oil at all. Vacuum lines all OK, except the cruise resume function is kaput. Door handles, window lifts and sunroof all work fine. All the usual stuff has been done - radiator, water pump, steering rack, CV boots and joints as necessary.

Now my indie mech wants to do struts & mounts, con rod bearings (it knocks on startup but the crank looks fine), lifters (it rattles), motor mounts, all belts. Looks like $1300.

What am I missing here, if anything? It's a lot of loot on a old car, but she sure loves it. And it's a lot less than a late-model A4.

Default the knocking is probly ignition timing issue.

I have over 250k miles on the bottom of my 86 4kq and no noises or smoke at all. The suspension may need doing, as well as control arm bushings.
I would just concentrate on rubeer stuff and high wear items. May be a good idea to replace lifters, but other than that, if it IS in fact just timing, I'd leave the motor alone.

Default No, I'm afraid not. Got some copper showing on the bearings.

But the crank is primo perfect. Good advice on the other rubber stuff -- thanks.

Default LoL. I like the bottom of the list.

"If any two apply, get rid of the car" clutch slips (seems common on the forum lately) and coat hangers or zip ties used to hold things together. :-)
