Default rebuild - what kind of head bolts to get?

I've read that the stock Audi bolts suck. ARP hardware might be too expensive (but I haven't checked into it). I'm just doing a basic rebuild of a stock 4 cylinder motor. What are my other alternatives? At this point I'll probably just go with the stock pieces unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Thanks.

I don't know why the stock bolts would 'suck'. I've never heard of any problems. I would buy new ones, however, and not re-use.

Default There is nothing wrong with stock head bolts...

They are very well designed. You could even re-use them if you have a stretch gauge.

Default Why I thought the stock bolts weren't good

Maybe it had to do with the 10v turbo motors but I remember reading on more than one occassion that people were having difficulty with the stock bolts breaking. Damn if I could find that info now.....I'm going to keep looking for a bit.

Default Post some info and I can calculate the % of yeild

It's a matter of what load is placed on the bolt/stud. Post the Diameter, length, type (Look at the head of the bolt. It should have a number on it) and torque value.

Normal bolting is done to about 50% (depending on application) of yield. If the bolts have been stretched past their elastic limit and become plastic they will be no good. If they haven't been "yielded" then they are good indefinately.

Turbo cars see much higher combusion chamber pressures and have a tendancy to Spike the load and yield the bolt.
