Default Removing Intake Manifold

So I am having issues trying to pull out the old fuel injector inserts. At this point, I think I need to remove the intake manifold in order to access the inserts. Is the intake manifold accessible for removal with the engine still in the car? Are there any other parts I will need to remove first such as the exhaust manifold? Do I need to drain the oil first?

Thanks

Default I'd try some more, first..

I'd try some more at getting teh injectors out, first. Hopefully, you really *do* need to pull them..

But if you are convinced that you need to take off the intake manifold:

-Don't need to take off exhaust manifold.

-Nothing to drain (manifold is dry)

-Can be done with the motor 'in the car'

-There are 6 allen head bolts holding on the intake manifold to the head. You'll probabably have to pull the complete CIS metering unit and airbox out to get at the intake bolts (Not really all that bad to do. Maybe replace your air filter while in there?)

From Phil Paynes site (Under 'head removal, Special tools):

"An extra-long ball-end 6mm Allen key, parted off and cemented or welded into a 6mm 1/4" drive socket to yield a driver exactly 141mm in length. This tool is ideal for accessing the inlet manifold securing screws, especially when a Dialynx manifold is fitted (the raised lettering on top fouls access). It may be useful to wear a heavy or padded glove on the hand applying force - inlet manifold screws release very abruptly and completely."

(Yes, they kind of 'pop' when they undo... :-)

Maybe somone can post a picture of the intake manifold, so he can see where the bolts are...?

http://www.isham-research.co.uk/quattro/i5_head.html</a

I used the tool, a long screwdriver, and a wood block for leverage. They are very, very, very tough!

Default New thought

I still haven't removed the intake manifold and I am trying to avoid it. However, I still need to get a couple of injector tips and pieces of the plastic inserts out the cylinders. What if I connect my shop vac up to a tube to try and suck out the parts. Would I be able to create enough suction?

Default Vaccum may work..

Vaccum, and maybe some work with a dental pick or similar too may get you somewhere. Really, you won't know unless you try. What's the worst that can happen? You have topull the intake?

Like you are thinking, I think I'd go through a lot before I'd think about pulling the intake off.. :-)

Default Oh the memories..................

We had to eventually remove the intake and that was really not bad at all. Just remember to get a new gasket. We had a lot more access with it (IM) out of the way. The parts were fished out with vacuum, picks and some surgical tools. Worst thing? I was shorted two injector seals so I had to drive 28 miles for less than one dollar worth of parts and on the return trip in my Urq I got a ticket 2 blocks from my home. Hmmmmm. Reckless driving at 20 mph. Judge laughed that one all the way out of court. The 240+ pound State Patrol officer (female)even had a gun at my face and she got the color of the car wrong (red?) make, my address and even the location. I told the judge (female) I thought it was PMS or something. The court room went into laughfter.
