Synthetic Gear Oils
What is the opinion on using synthetic gear oils? I have an 85 4KS w/ 1.8 and a 5sp and have decided that it's time to switch to synthetic oils. I wanted to know what brands and viscosities were popular and also if there is a possibility for seal damage. Thanks for any and all help.

Opinions vary on here. I had Mobil 1 (engine oil) for higher mileage in my 4kq and it leaked it...
so back to dino oil. Others guys on this board have used synth with no problems.

Re: Synthetic Gear Oils
Gear oil...no problem. I have it in mine, I think it's Amsoil and the SFI codes were compatible with oem.
Engine oil...no thanks. Tried it, waste of $. Couldn't keep brand new lifters quiet and leaked out of an engine with fresh gaskets and seals.

Never used synthetic engine oil...and wont with my 2 cars
High price, possibly MORE engine leaks, "virtually" no benefit, not worth it, IMHO.
Now, if I had just rebuilt an engine, sure, but Im not about to switch over to synthetic after this car has had regular oil all its life, a waste, per se.
When I go 3B/AAN, I will use synthetic. Gear oil, Im all about that

Gear oil: RedLine MT-90 Engine oil - My car has had mobil one since the day it got home from
the show room! Previous owner was a chem-engineer from mobil. Made me promise that i'd keep using M1. I go 5000 miles on an oil change and use an oil filter from a Jetta Diesel (has much more filter surface area).

Gear oil stuff I've learned..
My opinion is its a nice upgrade if you live in cold climates. Older Audi's require GL4 (Redline MT90 being a GL4 synthetic) as they use brass synchro's and some GL5's have harsher additives that will cause the rings to wear faster (like it will half their duration but you won't find shards of gear on the drain plug). You will notice it when starting out in the winter. If you have a quattro, GL5 can go in the rear diff as it doesn't have any brass back there. I've done both the tranny and rear end in my 4KQ -238K miles and no tranny leaks. Can't say the same for engine oil - then again, that was in a Volvo. See URL to buy Redline.

http://www.myoilshop.com</a
