Default 1991 200 20v dist. cap replacement tips

As most of you know, the 20v distirbutor cap is a pain to take off and a bigger one to put back on. Having just done that, I thought I would share a tip or two. First, if you do not know this, the 200 20v rotor is specific to this motor. It is Bosch part # 1 234 332 414 850. it has a much narrower "nose" to prevent the spark from jumping to early or late. I found the previous owner or their mechanic did not know that and had the wrong rotor in my car. Taking the cap off is realatively easy. The rear spring clip can be popped off with a long screwdriver fron the top, and the front one can be popped off with a screwdriver placed under the intake manifold. After chipping off the old, incorrect rotor and gluing the new one on I checked everything to make sure it fit properly.

Here is the tip of the day. I put the rear most clip on first and helped it alon by rocking the distributor cap back toward the clip. This made the effective length shorter for the clip to extend and clip onto the cap. I then brought the cap back to flush with the distributor and attached the forward clip by pushing on it with a long screwdriver placed between the intake manifold and the valve cover. By pushing straight down on it, it extends the clip into place.

Car was missing badly under full throttle, and the rotor change seemed to smooth out the idle and correct the miss.

Default Read here for details on Sarge Schutt's 3B engine failure due to misfire...

Those of you who have the 3B engine would be well served to read this, in his instance high boost + misfire = rod thru the block:

http://www.audifans.com/archives/1998/12/msg00428.html</a

Default Reason for tip was so members could EASILY check the rotor

I put it off for a while, because I read that it is a major pain to remove. After I figured out how to get the rear clip on easily, and that I could get the front clip on from above, the job became no big deal. Unless you did the rotor replacement yourself, and KNOW that it is correct, I would encourage anyone to check!
