Alternator allignment?
Ever since I got this car (1990 Audi 200 TQ) I've had belts squeelling really bad. It only seems to squeel when I have the climate control on. The belt is fairly new so I don't think it's the belt's fault. I even tried some belt dressing on them and still no better. Now I've cut off the A/C condensor belt, I thought because of the climate control in the car the condensor was ran no matter what when the climate control was on. That didn't help anything. So I've pretty much narrowed it down to the alternator belt, figuring that when the climate control is on theres more of a load on the alternator, creating the lovely squeeling sound. The belt is nice and tight, but it still squeels. So I'm figuring that the alignment of the alternator with respect to the other pulley is off. How can i remedy this? Or do I just need to experiement with some big washers on the braket and go through some trial/error? Any suggestions are welcome, thanks.

I can't imagine the alternator alignment making a difference.........
Belts are cheap, so suggest putting on a new one. Stay away from Kelly-Springfield brand. They don't break, but found them to stretch again and again requiring additional tightening.

might also try
when you have the belt removed turning the alternator by hand to check the bearings in it. It shoudl turn nice and smooth, I've had ones squeel under load when the bearings were beginning to fail.

Get it *tight*...
Presuming the alternator is ok, make sure the tension system is in good order. It took me a few minutes to figure it out (I ain't that quick!), but the tensioner-bolt-toothed-dealie is actually quite clever. Loosen all the mounting bolts, use the toothed bolt to get the belt TIGHT (like, turns just 1/4 of the way when you try to twist it mid-span) and tighten everything down.
The teeth were stripped off the tensioner bolt on mine, and I was happy to find it was (iirc) $6 new from the dealer... and worth every penny!
Good luck!

Oh, and, the right belts
Meant to include in the earlier post... be sure to use the right, german belts... the cheap ones from the local Kragen/AutoZone just don't cut it... I learned that the hard way, too, and it's much better to spend a few dollars more than to see your new belt start squealing and spit itself off a few blocks from its installation point!
Good luck!

If the alingment was off and you were not using the proper belt...
it would fly off. Seen it happen.
It's important to use the correct type belt(Continental, etc)and make sure it's tight.
