Buying parts online US -> Canada, anyone done this before?
Hi!
As some of you know, I'm located up in Vancouver, BC, Canada (Westcoast of Canada).
Im kind of testing the waters with ordering parts online from the US.
I have a fuel pressure regulator for my V8 quattro on the way.
I was just curious if any other people from Canada have ordered parts online before. What kind of % can I expect to get taxed when my order arrives?
Thanks,
Tomek.

If you think bringing parts into Canada is bad....
don't bring a car in. You get hassled on both sides of the border.
Of the courier companies, I've heard that FedEx is less brutal than UPS for cross-border stuff, and I've had a solitary bad experience with using USPS (parcel lost - end up with an endless loop of, "call the other guy and ask them to find it"). For us near-border dwellers, a friend in the US is helpful, or a US address like a Staples or Mailboxes Etc. (now the UPS Store?).
As far as what you can expect to get taxed, that can be somewhat tricky - there's your basic GST and PST, then there'll be handling charges from Canada Customs if they have to open the package (which is GST-able), then there's Brokerage, and GST on that. I believe that you can also get dinged on duty if the car part was not made in an Auto Pact nation (ie - outside of North America)....they really do add up. No big suprise that Canadians commonly ask the US senders to declare the package as a Gift less than C$60. Customs is cracking down on gifts too - there'll better be a slice of birthday cake and a letter from your friend talking about the weather up here in that box with the parts, otherwise they'll ignore the "Gift" designation and tax you. Sorta makes you wonder who "Free trade" benefitted, anyway (besides the resume of Brian, father of E! Talk guy).
In many cases, I've purchased my parts from VM Autohaus in Burnaby.........yes, THAT Burnaby. Save the shipping charges and walk to get your parts ;-)

VM Autohaus.....talk to Kristian
