Drat! Throw Out Bearing is Howling. Time for a New Clutch.
I knew my car was running a little too well.
I'm getting a strong pulsation in the pedal when depressing the clutch. Just started suddenly while entering the freeway tonight. Only drove about a mile to get home. I'm assuming I should just leave it sit until I get the clutch fixed but can I drive it at all? Might want to de-grease the tranny at the carwash. It's really black. Covered with Pentosin and trans oil.
Anyhoo I know what needs to happen now and have some parts on the way. Luk clutch kit, trans main+drive flange seals, crank seal and new throw out guide. Just shy of $400 so not horrible yet.
I've done a few clutch/trans swaps on UrS4s but not a 200. I assume they are similar but not exactly the same. I have the Bently manual.
On the UrS4s I did I always just scuffed the flywheel with emory cloth until the glaze was gone. Those dual mass flywheels had almost no signs of surface wear. They just had a little shine to them. The clutches all worked fine with smooth engagement and no chatter afterwards. Can I do this on the 200 20v flywheel?
Not looking forward to doing this on the ground. I did an UrS4 for a friend who had access to a lift and it wasn't a bad job at all. (About 6 hours taking our time but I had done it a couple times before). I'll probably just do it in the garage in stages but if anyone knows of a lift that could be had for a day in cols OH let me know. I read a couple posts about pulling the engine instead of dropping the trans. Any thoughts or experience with this?
Anything else you can think of to do "while I'm in there".

I can't tell you about the clutch job from the tranny... but I'm digging in to the engine now...
I would say that you don't want to pull the engine. I was talking to the mechanic that is graciously letting me assist him in working on the car and he said that there is no way you'd want to pull the motor to do the clutch... just in my case I'm also rebuilding the head, so the turbo, head, cooling system etc. etc. etc. is already out of the way.
To remove the engine is a pretty big job - I say do it via the transmission route.
