HELP--rebuilt starter spins but doesn't engage
Hi all,
Hi all,
I'm a new member here, but an old Audi owner (86 5000 CS quattro, for the past 20+ years).
Car wouldn't start Sunday PM after driving it up Ft. Eustis--just a click on turning the key. Same when "jumping" it from another car, but push-started in 2nd no problem. Battery and chanrging system checked good.
I picked up a Bosch re-built starter on the way home from work and spent the evening in the driveway installing it (and swatting the mosquitoes).
Finally got it put in--when I turn the key I can hear the starter spin, but the engine doesn't turn over. I guess that means the pinion isn't entending/engaging. Could it be a bad solenoid? I thought that the starter shouldn't spin until and unless the solenoid extends the pinion.
Need to get this thing fixed as it's my DD . . . .
Thanks in advance!

I only saw one terminal, same side and orientation as on the original. I'll take another look tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks again,

Thanks for the response. I called my local FLAPS--they agreed to test it--if bad they'll FEDEX in another. Hopefully, third time will be the "charm."
Best,

Fixed--it was the REMAN starter . . . .
Hi All,
Got a different re-man starter (BOSCH)--it arrived on Friday. Finally got around to installing this PM, car started on first attempt. Looks like it was a problem with the first unit I got at the FLAPS. Manager was a sport about it--got $ AND my core starter back too (he held it for me until we could figure this out).
So, other than the time lost, all's well that ends well.
Thanks again for your time!
