Just got some Bilsteins. Any BTDT?
Just bought some Bilstein Sports for the 5ktq. It will be good to get the Boge TG's off the car...
Anyways, any BTDT on replacement? The fronts look like they simply unbolt from the top and slide up. Will I need the special wrench to do this? Any alternative way?
The rears look like you just undo the bottom bolt and the 3 up top.
I still need to take a closer look.
Thanks for any BTDT...
Also thanks to Ken K. for the struts...

BTDT...
About the front...BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. They took me the better part of the day (along with the BIRA kit...) You have to pull the whole strut out of the car, including splitting the ball joint, tie rods, and disengaging the stub axle. The factory manual also recommends new bolts for the stub axle, and remember the torque spec is 1/4 turn past what's listed in the Bentley. A monkey wrench is handy for the strut cap (loosen while still on the car.) Your bilsteins should have come w/new caps and a cool wrench that goes with them. Recommend new strut bearings.
The rears took 1/2 hour.

Umm, my fronts only took a half hour per side...
They pop out through the top of the strut tower, IMHO this is one of the easiest jobs on the car (with the proper tools, which I broke down and bought).
Not sure why you'd want to yank the whole strut as it seems to be designed to be done with the strut assy still in the car.
Steve, drive down to Georgia and I will loan you the tools, then you can take Jim Bush's CQ door back with you.

Hey Steve, whatcha doing with the old Boge TG's?
Do they work still? The 5kcstq I was going to sell is not getting sold quickly (I'm not really trying tho'), and I know those struts are a little looser than I prefer.

I think they may be dead...
I'm unsure really of what thier condition truely is.
I think they're 4-5 years old...
There's no knocking, clunking or bouncing coming from them but that could be due to the fact that the S6 Eibachs spring rates might be to aggressive to allow them to travel much...

Re: what are the "right" tools?
I know, the monkey wrench sounds like a hack, but the strut caps are completely round and featureless. Can't remember if there's a keyway around the shock shaft...
