Default Looking into buying a V8Q

What are some of the problem areas for these cars? What should I look for when "inspecting" one?

Theres a write up on the cavets of the V8 check out the knowledgebase on the audifans site. Lots of info.

But the typical timing belt service, check out the Audiconnection web site they have a writeup on parts cost & such. & by the way the price is a tad bit more than if your usta the I-5's ;-)LOL... But the timing belt isn't difficult on the V8. & the Auto trany on the early V8's were a problem, but as far as other things that could go wrong my thoughts are that the V8's were built alot better than the 5k/200's. Typical hydrolic, electrical gremlins, ect aren't that prevalent in the V8's. I've owned 3 V8's over the years & have never had to drop a ton of $ on any of them.
But more so than the other type$$'s you CAN NOT SCRIMP ON THESE CARS. So if your not ready for a "comitment" then the V8's not for you.
Thanx

Default Inspection should include at minimum:

Check drive axles - they are hard to get replacements for
check fuel tank for leaks - they seem more prone than the other t44's
timing belt - very expensive but required if not done
condition of the trans - check fluid etc
power steering hoses - they tend to leak and are very expensive

other than that the usual tune up stuff.. only things to shy away from are bad trannys.. rest is easy to fix, just get the seller to neg.

Default So basically

I want to find one that has had the tranny replaced recently and the T-belt done too. Should I go with the 4.2L or the 3.8(or is it 3.6)? I already know about Audi "expenses, I own a 90 already. Just looking to pick up something a little nicer.

Go with a 4.2L if you can find one in good shape, but if a 3.6L should come along and near mint condition then I would also consider a 3.6L.

BTW the 4.2 get better gas mileage than the 3.6 who would have thought that a 4.2L would get better mileage than a 3.6L engine.

On the test drive, as RockinV8 once said, drive the car as though you stole it. Get it up to temperature and then shut it off. See if it will restart when it is hot. This could be a great bargaining point. The crank and speed sensors usually will cause a no start when hot condition. This is a known problem with these cars.
