Default Lowbeam wiring problem?

Wanted to bump this thread

I looked at my Bentley wiring diagram and it shows a headlight control unit...<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/v8/msgs/98301.phtml">https://forums.audiworld.com/v8/msgs/98301.phtml</a</li></ul>

To answer your question from below..

If you have the Euro lights you'll have clear corners on the front headlamps vs the amber corners. Once you determine that and if that's the case I can tell you exactly where to check for the relays.

From his sig pic, they look to be euro lights. Sounds like the low-beam relay to me too.

I have my Audi World settings set to where I don't see anyone's sig pic. Sorry. I just checked yours and you do have the Euro's. Actually I remember your pic from when I used to have my settings turned on. That's a cool photo!

Anyway do this...
1. Remove front bumper. 2min job.
2. Look on the inside of the driver fender towards the bottom, but yet close to the front of the car around where the A/C condenser ends. You should see 3 relays. One of them is bad. I don't remember which one is which, but they are all the same relays. You can remove the relay bank from the fender by removing the two screws that hold it on, they are located on the outside of the fender. (this is the other reason the bumper has to be removed)
I replaced all of mine as they get corroded. This will all make crystal clear sense once your looking at it.
This is assuming the previous owner installed the relays in the recommended location.

You can buy new relays at this place. You'll have to call them. Ask for Jim or Keith. HTH

Default Differing installation of relays

I didn't remove the bumper because I found these attached to my AC hose:

<img src="http://www.pbase.com/danelmanperry/image/59228912/medium.jpg">

I'm assuming these are the three I'm looking for? They are all the same and look like they were placed as an afterthought...

I wiped the relay panel with a cloth, sandpapered the contacts on all three relays, and tried swapping them around but still no lowbeams

There IS alot of corrosion on the contacts/housing; should I assume they are all bad and replace them? If so, how do I properly clean the relay panel of corrosion?

My bentley manual further confused me:

<img src="http://www.pbase.com/danelmanperry/image/59228913/large.jpg">

This diagram shows a control unit. I think the small black box in the picture refers to a location; which is here:

<img src="http://www.pbase.com/danelmanperry/image/59228914/medium.jpg">

I can see this relay in the panel under the dash. However, on another page Bentley calls it something else which would lead me to believe its only purpose is for the auto-check system:

Thoughts? And thank you in advance... this is becoming lengthy

Hmmm, my car does not have relays there. That is not a good location either. In order to determine if those are in fact the relays why don't you unplug all three and see what happens. If those are the relays then you shouldn't get high beams or low beams.

Also, the Bentley will not cover the EURO lights as they were a popular "aftermarket" item that many people installed on these cars. It's actually a great system when working correctly. They sold these with lights and a complete harness along with installation instructions but many people have gone the "home made" route to save money which may be what the previous owner of your car did which makes it tricky to repair the system since you have to figure out how he wired it.

Default I'll try that

I was just curious if the relay in my aux panel (bentley pictures) is just for the auto-check system or whether it is important to the function of the lights?

Everything that was done to this car appears to be homemade unfortunately...

I found this pleasure sitting below the drivers headlight; again just forward of the AC condensor(?):

<img src="http://www.pbase.com/danelmanperry/image/59228916.jpg">

Two connectors just sitting there. The purple/white looks factory but the solid white does not. I can't see any other loose connections they would plug into either. There is also a single cut wire and what looks like someones 9006-to-9005 type connection zip-tied together; barely visible with brown and orange wires going to it at the top of my picture.

If pulling those relays doesn't change anything I'll stop being lazy and remove my bumper to check for more

Thanks again!

Default No luck...only wiring issues left?

I pulled all 3 relays and sure enough the highbeams didn't work. Process of elimination found the center socket is for the highbeams. I put each of the relays in that socket and all 3 ran the highbeams leading me to believe all 3 relays are working.

For good measure I also replaced the relay I was asking about in my aux panel with a known good and still no lowbeams!! I got so desperate I pulled the bulbs lol, but of course there is nothing wrong with them.

Check the wires that go into the relay bank. Not only did I replace my relays I also replaced some of the lock in connectors that go into the bottom of the relay bank. The wires were about ready to seperate from the connections so I re-crimped them with new connectors. The connectors I had to special order from the same place that I mentioned sells the relays.

I'm about out of ideas now. HTH
