See my reply in the thread just below or...
it may be the vacuum pump next to the battery. Diconnect and see.Let all of us know your finding as this seems to come up quite frqly, now that these 44's are getting older we have to stick together. I see a bunch of older Audis in the wrecking yards that are not banged up, so did the owners just gave up because no one was there to guide them? Anyone else has some thoughts on that topic?

Yes , on the suspect vacuum pump, if there is any leaking vacuum hose to any of the door lock cylinders then the vacuum pump will run, although not forever. it is timed i think. A test is to try to lock the doors. If the other 3 door locks do not pull down (other than the drivers door, that will go down because you are actuating it manually with the key)then you have a hose either disconnected or a leak somehwere. I had one under the carpet in the pass footwell. That is where the hose sits and is routed to the other doors. It had been chafing for a while and just wore through until it leaked. The next time you lock your doors, the drivers door tells the other doors to lock. Since the system isn't tight (hose leak)the pumps keeps running trying to build up pressure. It runs a little longer than normal but it does stop eventually. I don't remember what eventually turns it off, I think time sensor..
If you say something is always running, then it's probably your noisy fuel pump. I think there are a couple of diff types aout there. One of them is called a quiet pump. it's made differently. Not sure who makes it.

yea, such a shame to see type 44s in any wrecking yard.......
aren't wrecked, bodies and interiors look clean and good. What the wrecking yard guys tell me is that many have bad tranys that were too costly to repair, so they are banished to the wrecking yards as parts cars. Such a shame, but that is the economics of cars that are 15 to 20 years old..

Probably should swap it, mine was making noise too then one day it died, the towbill alone let alone the cab ride would have bought a brand new pump.
IIRC they're closer to 160 online for the 200/5000 pumps, which are basically the same just have to swap over the brackets. I used a 5000s pump in my 200, cost me 15 bucks from a pullnsave yard.

Re: Pierburg. Mmmmm, quiet. Ebay $125 or there abouts.
The door locks work fine. the noise is while car is running and doesn't stop till engine is off.
ill have to replace the fuel pump and see if that works. im gona replace the fuel filter this week so ill try and get a pump and do it at the same time ill let you guys know how it goes thx for the help. I love this forum it rocks. Old Audis rule even a bone head like me can work on them himself.
