Re: What weight oil you using? & you sure the oil level is rite?
20w50 year around as my oil pan gasket leaks a little. will replace after my FPR. and i always fill it up to the full line on the dipstick 10 quarts as the owners manual specifies

That'd be just a bit O'much oil in there..
"Oil consumption: The oil capacity stated in the owner's manual (10 quarts) is incorrect, and the level has been changed to 8.5 quarts. (1991)"
Since we all know that it's the same engine, the same applies.
The total capacity it however correct for a "dry" system, but since you can't empty the two hoses and oil cooler, it was re-rated to the correct amount, that should be re-filled to at the time of a oil change.

Cam life can be reduced by the lifters....
Since the lifters can either get stuck completely down or up you can have 2 different results fully down is like having to much lash and tends to wear the cam lobes as the transition is much more abrupt from no contact to contacting the cam. If they are stuck fully extended you can have valves getting burnt or not seating fully.
I'd replace them or get the rebuilt (that's what I do, rebuild them).

Are they noisy all of the time or just when you start it up?
Are they ticking or are they just making a mechanical niose while the engine runns. If its just when you start it and they quiet down when pressure comes up go to a heavier weight of oil as they are bleeding down between usage, if they are loud all of the time and ticking (TICK...TICK...TICK...TICK) then they are either not pumping up and clogged or worn and you could loose a cylinder under hard usage.

True^^^^^^^^^ But......
....I usually fill the car up with 8qts....run the motor for a little & turn it off. Go get a beer...or two ;-)...& check the level after the oil has settled, maybe 5 minutes or so.
You want the oil to be JUST above the Orange indecator @ the dipstick.

20/50W, A after my own heart! I run 20/50 year round as well.
Are the lifters ticking all the time? Or just does it for a few minutes after a cold morn startup?
Cause to be honest, I've had many many MANY V8's over the years, with varied mileage & have never had a noisy lifter problem. maybe on initial startup on a cold morn...but never anything that made me nervious.
& see mine & Scott's post below about overfilling.

Re: Are they noisy all of the time or just when you start it up?
there do make a sound all the time its not insanely loud like i cant hear from inside my car with the windows down passenger side is light tick the drivers side is a little louder and not as much of a tick as almost like a motor noise. would using less oil help?
