Default Cooling Fan Question

When my cooling fan in my 1990 Coupe Quattro went out last summer, I replaced it and just hard wired it in with a relay. The factory way wouldn't turn the fan on. I read about a large amperage inline fuse somewhere that will short out if the fan binds. Where is this located? I have a black cyliner with two wires coming off of it screwed into the fan housing. Is this it? If not, where is it and what is that? TIA, any help is appreciated.

Default The 100 has a metal fuse link located inside a square black plastic case, located about 6 inches....

behind the fan motor itself, attached to the strut tower. There also may be a large fuse located at one of the aux relay/fuse panels, under the dash.
