on my 87 5ktqw i cut off the exhaust from cat back.. i got the car for free and was just messing with it... hollowed cat.. ran 3" straight pipe no resonators (5000's have two resonators)all the way back to a 3.5" dual tip dtm style muffler... lets just say it was kinda loud... and at points sounded like ****... there was a couple times up hills in certain gears and rpms it sounded sooo mean.. gotta love the i5 engine when she's pissed

Like I said, the center is not a muffler, it is a resonator. Figure out about how long, wide, and tall the factory unit is, and get one in a 2.25" inlet/outlet size to be put in place of the factory unit (piping still ok, generally quite thick so it can be cleaned up and welded on w/out problem after many years. You can also use something like a glass-pack that is longer than your current factory resonator (Borla makes one that doesn't sound too bad on 5cyl's)...
