Default Its time for the timing belt...

The local Audi dealer quoted me about $650 cdn (about $433 USD) in labour to do a timing belt and water pump change. The car has 87,000 km on it. Do you recommend i bring my own parts? What parts do i need to order? Other than timing belt and water pump, does anything else need to be done when down there?

The dealer has never done a timing belt change on a 90 before, they didn't really seem confident.

Default BUT...

bringing up old topics does help others learn about the car. Most people would not search the forums for info on the timing belt if it didn't pertain to them.

Default AND

it must be noted that searching the archives often produces too much extraneous and irrelevant information that oftentimes makes it difficult to find what you are looking for.

Default Well...........

its all about resources!

What resources are available to you?

Here at AW we have this forum.

A collection of postings from folks all over the world covering every aspect one could imagine on Audi's, & more! )

The 'search' function is there, it serves a purpose. Those of us who post here quite frequently, see many, many post get reposted over & over again, asking the same questions.

Initially we enthusastically answer, but as time goes by, we get tired of answering the same questions over & over & over........

Hello Search function! )

Its there to use, to look up previous posts on particular subjects. "It works too"!

Its a tool, a resource, and by not using it, your severly limiting your resources.

Myself, I search the forum constantly for info.
I always find exactly what I'm looking for. It may take a few minutes, or a couple different searches, but the info has always been posted before. Usually these "earlier" posts are very indept on their answers! Imagine if that exact author had to post his indepth post over & over again? Eventually he would get tired of it, or
simply move on.

One example is my posting of me changing my automatic to manual! Its was very indepth, with pictures! Its was one of those posts that took sometime to do, and will not be easliy duplicated in the future, since it was fresh in my mind at the time! )

The search function is there for you! Its an invaluable "tool", resource, only if you use it!;O)

I just now searched looking for 'timimg belt' and found 201 posts on the subject! Within the first 10, they easily answered your question! :O)

Default Re: Well...........

MikTip,
I've read your post about the swap - very nice, and thank you. I am a member of many newsgroups and bulletin boards. However, when the search engine isn't very sophisticated or restrictive, it can lead to too many answers.

For example, I've found things while searching (and I've read many things unrealted to what I'm searching for) and then been unable to find them later because I can't remember the exact wording I used.

I just don't agree with the jump all over the newbie asking the question. The reference to search the archives always seems to come across as "Why do you bother asking, search first." It can be intimidating for newbies.

My $.02

So just leave the "newbie" question unanswered?

Why cant the folks first search, to see if the question has already been answered?

My reasoning here for this particular post, is I searched the forum, first, and seen the 201 previous posts covering "timing belt" which within the first 10, fully answered natwhite's question!

You guys are wasting more bandwidth discrediting the "search" function, instead of answering natwhites question! At least I pointed him in the right direction to "help himself".

How many of you know I host the timing belt proceedures on my website? Been there for months!
