obd I, II scanners at autozone, etc
does anybody have one of these and does it work at reading codes like it claims?
they had one in the local autopart flyer for $150 or so. Its not a brand name I know of but it might work well enough to get clear codes

true but to use VAG you need a notebook, correct?
if you already have a notebook its a great deal, if not then you will have to add about oh, $500 bucks to get one.
but yeah, VAG would be sweet to have for those times you just can't seem to figure out what the matter is.

Also depends
on which version you have/get. Some only work with serial, others USB.
You can get the cable on EBay for around $20-40.
I have ver 3.12 which works with serial ports, works fine for me.

You can run it on a old Pentium II notebook - I'd say sub-$200 or so...
...doesn't need anything fancy - then you can load your Bentley's on it and have it all right there...
If you get a long enough serial cable you could also just keep an old, junk PC in the garage too...
