A3 Sportback vs. 2006 GTI 5-door

you also didnt factor in lean burn FSI
we dont have it enabled in the states because our fuel is crapola. From what techs have told me Lean burn runs things as lean as 20:1 where 14:1 is normal. This is one of FSI's little tricks to eek out a hair more fuel economy with the correct fuel.

O.k. lets really look at that car.
Lets face some facts. A. the interior looks like the BMW 120d. Out dated and boring. B. The out side dosent look to special eather. Just another VW. Sorry but i realy cant even compair the two. What about the engine though. Can it beat the A3 of the line?

Oh I agree, the Sportback looks a lot better in my eyes...
But in GTI trim the 5 door look good, in non-GTI trim I hate it...It's amazing what wheels and lowering can do...

Build quality is quite different...
I've purchased 3 new VWs and 3 new Audis since 1997 and while the dubs are great for the money, the build quality is noticibly different, especially over time. I can honestly say that I've never brought an Audi back for service other than routine maintenance -- no so with the dubs (though I will complain about the sunroof rattle on my A3 when it goes in for it's oil change in a few weeks).

No, he is right. 1 UK gallon = 1.2 US gallons
Looks like someone needs a remedial class in basic arithmetic... UK gallon is bigger, so mpg in US will be lower.
If mileage in UK is 25/45 mpg, then you divide by 1.2 to get 20.8/37.5 mpg.

Well, the $64K question is whether VW will dumb down the suspension like they have
with most every VW they ever brought here. That would probably go a long way to negating any advantage the GTi might have over the A3 IMHO.
