Cigarette lighter and side fuse panel problems for dash cam
I am in the process of the installation of a dash cam c/w rear facing camera and having problems.
The unit came with a cigarette lighter plug / connection and various other bits of cabling, GPS etc. and rear camera etc.I thought so that I don’t have to look at the cigarette lighter cabling from that socket I will chop off the
Cigarette lighter and get the supply from the fuse box located by the driver’s door installed an inline fuse (see attachment), plus I did not want the cigarette lighter plug in the way.
So I found a spare live empty space and connected it up and use a dash securing bolt as my negative.
I tested for a 12v supply and found that it was O.K.
Switched the unit on and got the “welcome screen” and nothing else not even the rear camera.
To cut a long story short I dug out another cable with a cigarette lighter attachment and a “mini USB” plugged it in and it worked including the rear camera, I was able to scroll through settings etc. etc.
So the question is why does it work with the cigarette lighter plug / connection but not with the fuse panel connection.
Interesting

The supplied cig lighter plug probably had a little circuitry in it to reduce the 12V to 5.1 as supplied by USB standard. Sounds like you'll have to build it in with the lighter -> USB output, or find a wire harness that has the required circuitry. Or extract the PC board from the supplied cord and use that.

Many thanks for your contribution
It's funny you should say that I had considered stripping out the cigarette lighter pcb and then taking 12v fuse box supply into the pcb and then onwards to the dash cam etc.
If I'm honest I was a bit scared ( not of my soldering ability ) but of doing something that on the face of it does not look correct.
But now I will just go ahead.
Once again many thanks for your contribution.
I will update the thread on completion.

This is now the finished article.
Because of the small size I could either get a small ABS box that was to small or one that was to big to fit behind the fuse box / dashboard.
The black at the end is one continuous piece and then moved to the heat shrink.
The images are as progression
WITHOUT COVER (1 )
WITHOUT COVER OTHER SIDE (2 )
NEW END SOLDERED ON WITH HEAT SHRINK COVERING ( 3 )
NEW END SOLDERED ON OTHER SIDE ( 4 )
ALL FINISHED ( 5 )

Oh it's going to be fine until you get pulled over and the cop rips it out, thinking he found your stash.
Just kidding; glad I could help a little, and that you got it done so quickly!

Thanks for that but he / she will not be ripping anything out because as small as that tablet bottle is 90mm x 50mm it will not fit.
BUT I can hide all my needles in there only joking
