Considering a K & N...........
so....I pulled the EC today, just to take a peek at the stock filter. I have 16K on the little 3. well, I'm sorry I didn't take pics. 1st...the set up housing the air filter is way wacky, IMO. like, 10 screws, 4 torx; all to get to the air filter? not to mention 4 strongmen from borneo need to help you yank that EC off! So anyway, I was surprised to see the stock af was actually pretty dern clean. I had a K & N on my A4 and I remember it maybe breathing easier. I'm not sure there were a lot of gains, but maybe some improved gas mileage IIRC.

Also consider that as a trade-off, the K&N doesn't filter as well as the OEM filter.
More air = less restrictive = less filtering = more particles going through your engine.
Also you have to be careful about how much oil you put on the K&N lest it fubar your MAF sensor.
I'm not that desperate for a big intake note so I'm sticking with the OEM filter.

not a K&N fan
At the risk of igniting a flame war, I am not among those who like putting a foam filter upstream of all those very expensive EFI and engine parts.
For very dubious gains in HP or MPG you get in return a little bit of boy racer noise and a lot of abrasive, oily goop in the airbox, some of which inevitably finds its way into the system.
Tried one on my A4 and removed it at the next maintenance.

K&N was my first GO mod. I put about 10K on it before I got my Carbonio CAI.
K&N allows better air flow than the stock filter but the Carbonio (foam/paper filter) is better than both.
However, I noticed a few things about the K&N filter that convinced me to switch. One, it was warped due to the intense heat from the exhaust manifold (the EC heatshield is not very effective) and the K&N is heavy.

K&N is a cotton/fabric filter, not a foam-element filter, making it much better than
the aftermarket air-filters you are referring to. I also would never run a foam filter, but cotton/fabric filters actually stop more particles than paper. Read up:

http://www.knfilters.com/filter_facts.htm#PAPER</a
