Default so does it mean no oil consumption during break in = good?

I always thought any motor is supposed to consume a little oil, and was told to expect a top-up during break-in.

Default During break-in some oil consumption is normal. The engine is tight and friction is alot higher..

during this time. If you didn't have to top off the oil during the first 5K oil change then it could be assumed that the rings got seated real well very early on (the way it's supposed to...some people believe that the true "break-in" is done during the first 1-100 miles. Do a search on Google for "Motoman and engine brea-in). After about 3-5K miles, if it is still using more than 1 qt per 1000 miles I would say that it didn't seat optimally durimg break-in. It might be "acceptable" and won't adversely affect your performance or anything but it's not great. Some cars with exceptinally hard rings take a real long time to break-in. Sometimes it's 15-30K miles.
