I couldn't get the curt wiring harness recommended to work so I wired my 4 wires directly to the tail lights and it works great. My trailer only has LEDs so the draw is minimal.
I am trying to do the same thing for my car. I wonder if you or anyone can explain what wires to connect to? I can't get my tail lights off even after removing the two screws, so I can't use a multimeter on the connector to figure out which wires to tap. Also I can see no other connectors behind the trunk panels that I could open to check.

It's amazing how little info is out there about the 2015 A3's. There must be a conspiracy!

Paul did you ever find the info you need?
I found that information from reading vwvortex forum and specifically the information posted from this user: VWVortex.com - CURT Manufacturing has Released the A3 Sedan Hitch Receiver
and used that and the graphic diagram (see here) he provided of the wiring to show the u-haul installer in my area and got it installed on my 2015 A3.

No, I haven't finished this, and my trunk is still torn apart, annoying my wife. So, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! :-)

I finally tried this out using a Curt 59236 converter (the one specified for this car by etrailer IIRC), but it didn't work for me. Trailer brakes and tail lights look OK, and the right turn signal too. But when I try the left turn signal, the trailer right turn signal is the one that flashes. The left signal gives a weak flash now and then.

It's not entirely clear that the thread linked to was 100% successful either. The writer said he just needed brakes...
