Dumb to buy an A5 2.0T with new pistons, rings and camshaft?
New here, and I'm looking to buy my first Audi. I was set on finding an S5 v8, but I've decided my money needs to go toward a daily driver and the A5 2.0T should be a better fit for now.
I'm scheduled to drive a 2010 that had the oil consumption issue recently resolved (4 months ago) by Audi with new pistons, rings and camshaft at 77,000 miles. Seller has records for this work and recent tranny and differential fluid changes as well.
Should I be worried or is this a good thing and I'm getting a rebuilt engine with a lot more miles left? Are there other issues that tend to come with the oil consumption and is this just the tip of the iceberg for more problems to come?
The price is a couple grand below kbb.

It's only a couple grand below KBB? I would need it to be a lot better deal than that to go near it. Personally I would pass on any car with all that rebuilding and just wait it out. You should be able to find something in that year range that hasn't had all that work done to it. Personally I would spend a bit more to get a little newer car. Good luck with your search!

Hi, We purchased a 2011 Q5 2.0T that suffered from the oil consumption issue. We reported it early on so we had documented history. With 88k miles on it the Q5 went into the dealer for the major surgery. The dealer had a tech that was doing 1 or 2 a week for more then a year so he knew the job well. It took 4 days and they did a great job and we had no oil consumption issue at all once the repair was done. We just sold the Q5 with 104k miles on it and it was fine. So, if the repair was done by Audi I would not worry at all. They know the repair well and it needed to be done so go for it.

Passed... now looking at an S5
Thanks for the feedback. I passed on it when I learned it had to go back to the dealer a second time.
I'm back to looking at a 2010 S5 since I've found one with a Platinum Extended Warranty good for another 22 months. My fingers are crossed.

Many 2010 - 2012 CAEB 2.0T’s had premature piston ring wear issues causing increase of burning oil as the engine ages. The solution is a new pistons & rings kit, and while in there then refresh other bits like timing, etc. Some were repaired on warranty and some by the ensuing US class action suit. Nothing wrong with buying a rebuilt CAEB with good documentation, in fact it is preferred compared to buying an affected CAEB that has not had the proper repair service.

Our 2012 A4 was diagnosed with the issue. The dealer did the upgrade and charged ~$900 for the fix which was a portion of the total. I don't have the invoice in front of me, but it's been perfect for the last ~20K miles.
