need someones opinion who knows how dealerships work!
so im in the hunt for an audi s5. Ive decided to wait it out for the v6 supercharged. I went to my local dealer and they said its about 18 months away which coincides with all the information that is out there. They wanted a 1000 deposit to get my name on the list and told me i could have the car by nov 2010 and will have the first allocation. I can get my money back for any reason 3 months prior to the car being pulled for building, so what does everyone think??? should i wait or jump on the opportunity to be the first in line???

sounds perfectly normal... many of us put $5k down to wait for the 08 v8
You'll see that follow ups to this will ask you more detailed questions, to get at the general trustworthyness of your specific dealer, but in general, what you say in your post rings true.
And btw, you'll LOVE the car, even if it is a FRIDAY, like mine.

Look at it this way....
If you want to be the first, you will pay for it $$$. If that doesn't bother you, go for the gusto and enjoy.
However, bare in mind no one else is really going to know what engine you have other than us enthusiasts here. ; )

All deposits are refundable by law unless you sign a contract indicating otherwise.
$1000 is likely a number they arrived at to avoid people leaving deposits at multiple dealers, only to take delivery of one car. This way it leaves other allocations open for people who intend to take possession.
The only thing in question is whether you feel they will honour your position as first in line. Most dealers do, but if you have any doubts, find another dealer. Ask in the correct AW regional forum for a recommended dealer in your area.

I put a (refundable) $1000 deposit on mine.
It was credited to the cost of the car. It was also done by check, which they held and never cashed, so there would be no problem with a refund.
I was never worried about it, as I was dealing with a dealer (Yuri @ Momentum Houston) who I consider to be the most reputable and honest car dealer I've ever worked with.

Putting a deposit is normal. The 3 month timeline for refund is weird...
especially since you may not know about the car being pulled for build until after that 3 month date has passed. My dealer did not put limitations on how or why the deposit would be refundable. Unless you order a car they would have a tough time to sell (think specialty colors or no options), there's no reason why the deposit should not be refundable if, for example, financing doesn't work out.

+1. Experience on this forum shows that there were very few people, if any, who knew 3 months
in advance of build date. Audi doesn't even know that so how could you know it?
