A thought on the TDI. While testers have been raving about the torque
as compared to the equivalent gas engine, no one has commented much on the handling.
Like for like, a diesel will be heavier than a petrol version. This would not pose a problem for a diesel R8, for example, but with the front weight bias in an A5, wouldn't this translate to relatively worse handling?
Maybe Jason can comment on this as he's probably the only person on the boards (or George) whose driven both.

Like for like - you shouldn't compare the 3.0 TDI with the V8 4.2
The better reference point would be the 3.2 (although the TDI would murder the 3.2 in terms of torque).

That's not much lighter. The 3.0TDI is heavy for an Audi V6...
... the 3.2 FSI and 4.2 FSI are both aluminum block engines while the TDI is steel.
I really like the idea of the 3.0TDI but am dissapointed by it's high relative weight. Could the increased weight also be due to the turbo?

Why not...
I have my pre-order placed for an S5, but would seriously consider getting a A5 TDI S-Line if it were offered in the states.
Not only is the mileage much better but a diesel lasts much longer. Also, performance is not all that much less.
Although, I would miss the V8 sound, and finding diesel pumps in some areas at all hours of the night can prove difficult.
They are very comparable, each with certain attributes.
Those are just my personal thoughts, I don't think you're wrong.
Also, my friends GMC diesel truck hits 60MPH in 5.6 seconds, and it weighs about 7000 pounds and returns with mileage comparable to what an S5 will get... about 25mpg... I've seen what diesels can do... When tuned.

Focused more on handling. Ultimately the 3.2 gas engined car will out handle
the TDI. TDI will definitely be faster of course, with so much more torque.
Just wondering how the extra 100 lbs over the front axle compromises the feel.
