Default when do you top off your oil?

2010 A5 2.0T. I dont have the oil burning problem. It appears after 3500-4000 miles, I lose a quart. The oil indicator light isnt on yet, but when I check oil level through the MMI, the bar is empty. I took it to dealer to top it off, service guy said to wait until indicator light comes on to top it off. He said dont do it now, even though MMI oil bar is empty. He gave me a quart to store in my trunk and sent me on my way.

Thoughts?

I have been doing it every time the warning light comes on...seems like it has been about three times a year or so. Pretty annoying especiailly since the oil grade/weight is not necessarily very common. I am hoping that when I take delivery of my S5 in a few weeks that the supercharged six does not have the same issue

So its ok to wait for the warning light, even though MMI oil bar is empty?

Guess I'm lucky. My 2011 A5 burned no oil, and so far same with my 2013 S5. I carry a quart of oil in the trunk, but have never had to add anything. My S5 goes in for 5K service next week, and MMI shows 1 bar from full.

Wow, waiting on the light to come on? That's a bit much for me.
I purchased a good ole fashion dip stick and check my oil that way. The MMI is fine but I verify with the dipstick on both our 3.2 Q5 and 3.0 S5. One dipstick reads either engine.
