I thought you still had Hotspot for either and it was data limited, but after looking it up you are correct. The Audi MMI Connect app on the phone needs to connect via wifi right? So will that only work if you have Plus? I use the view calendar for navigation and send address to audi connect often.

Why? It's a phone running on whatever network you choose? Does not need wifi.....your S5 is also using the cell network. Your S5 does not do what your cell phone should do - use wifi if a better signal is available over the LTE/4G/3G (ugh) network. It (S5) is always using the cell network...
So a lot of good points have been made in here. For sure i would do the Connect PRIME (18 months) cuz i think it's worth it for the additional features. I love the MMI App and use it quite often especially the Alerts for when I'm traveling - the "Peace of Mind" knowing i can check my car hasn't moved or i can locate it if it has i think is worth it. I'm not sure about Audi Music Stream or Internet Radio (I just use Pandora/Spotify on my phone) but will check those out.
But the Connect PLUS for a $20 monthly subscription sounds like just extra money in Audi/AT&T's pockets considering this is something thats offered elsewhere (outside of the US) as a tethering feature for free. It is nice having Wifi in the car for FaceTime and Skype calls but other than that..... most places have LTE connection where i live and sometimes that is just better than some wifi networks.
Connect PRIME includes 6GB of hotspot data. You only need Connect PLUS once you've burned through the 6GB.

I just checked mine and it said i've used 2.13GB in the last 30 days.
