I think you are absolutely right. You would think adding better quality door woofers would be the better solution. Figures Audi goes with the cheaper solution.

Every manufacturer does this. This is exactly the reason why the aftermarket car audio industry hasn't died.
And exactly why I tell people not to bother retrofitting B&O in their car with OEM parts.

For mysterious reasons, Audi was driving the front door woofer much lower than it was actually capable of playing. It's not a software limitation because it has a hard cutoff around 46hz. This really abuses that poor square horn woofer and sounds terrible. I wish they would have just put a normal 6.5" round woofer there. It would have been a whole lot better.
