advice needed, new poster, contemplating allroad purchase.
alright, I am betting this is the place to get an opinion...
I am contemplating buying a sub 40K mile 2004 6/bi-turbo allroad. I will put between 25K and 30K miles annually and need something for the highway and for offroad logging/mining roads (nothing hardcore). I am planning to drive the tires off this until the car is toast.
My questions are ....1) is this the right car? 2) what is real world mileage on the highway? 3) what should I be concerned with regarding the mechanics (what normally breaks and when) LOL? 4)what would a decent price be for the above mentioned allroad? 5) Would an aftermarket warranty for 50K miles/$3K be worth it?
I tried to read through the forum and lots of info, just trying to narrow things down a bit.
Thanks~

Some answers
1) Yes, but so would be many other vehicles out there for the type of use you described.
2) On my 2004 2.7 6MT I average 23mpg on cruise control at 75mph. Other drivers have reported lower mileage.
3) Lots can go wrong with a complicated car like an allroad. If you favor simplicity, then perhaps you should look elsewhere.
4) ~$25,000 with CPO, ~$23,000 without CPO (obviously depending on condition). Some will say that you can do better than that, but if you are looking for a very well-kept specimen, than the reality is that a dealer will not let it go much lower than that.
5) If non CPO, then having a warranty does make sense under most circumstances (opinions may vary). My suggestion is to find a CPO car to begin with and forget about the extra warranty.

Admittedly I am biased, but why look for CPO and forget about extended warranty?
CPO is two years maximum coverage, and is only a named component plan, not exclusionary.
So for $2K to $2500 for the cost of CPO, you don't get much in term of coverage.
For not much more (~$3K), you can get 4 or 5 years of exclusionary coverage. If you plan on keeping the AR for a while, it's a MUCH better deal.

Meh, CPO dealer cost is ~$1500 and at times its price can be part of the negotiation process>
I think in my mind CPO coverage is one of those cases when "it's just good enough".
Sure, better plans can be found but some owners will probably want to balance some risk (i.e. coverage for "only" two years) with some potential savings (~$3000 for a warranty is a considerable chunk of money).

Thanks for the advice and thoughts guys.....
I had CPO warranty on a benz and it worked out well.....is the Audi not as good?
Bruce, what warranty do you suggest for 3K/4 years?
Thanks all..........cool site, I am betting I will be tricking it out before I am done.
