Default Need info on how this car handles high millage.

I'm looking at an 04 avant with 97k miles on it. It's at a good price so it's worth considering. I know that Both Head Gaskets, 2 Starter Coils, Radiator, Alternator Belt, and Brakes all replaced under warranty. In fact the car is certified and still has 3k miles left on warranty.

I just need to know what kind of issues these cars have when they get higher in mileage. I know the current owner has taken very good care of it and the previous owner drove it mostly on the highway.

I also only drive about 7k miles a year.

Your comments would be appreciated.

Roger

the car might just break from your lack of use since it is so used to being on the road so much.

Default Roger,i bought mine with 95k miles on it and to date...

Ive done many small repairs to it such as wiper motor transmission. mass airflow sensor. 1 coilpack, rear brakes/rotors,plugs,fuel filter, all fluids flushed including a redline brand trans fluid for smoother shifting and some other things im probably forgetting. It was a 5th/6th car for me so it didnt bother me buying one with all those miles.I associate the above costs with a higher mileage car,but feel the sticker savings to be worth it for me as long as the driveline and engine hold together.I spoke to the orig owner and he drove this car 200+ miles a day on the highway so i felt alright buying this one. Seems like when a repair is needed at an indie, bill is 300-500 bucks and maybe once every 3 months. good luck.

Default One issue that has been noted are cam chain tensioner replacement at 100K or more miles

Expensive fix (pull engine). If you're doing the clutch, good time to replace tensiooners also.

Default Not really, we don't know what precipitated the engine removal do we? perhaps the water leak?

If the heads came off for a water leak of course the tensioners would be replaced wouldn't they?

Default Quote: "chain tensioner (engine was pulled out)"

Maybe that was the serpentine belt tensioner? Or they just replaced the tensioners while the engine was out for a leak repair?

It is no surprise that these engines will need new cam chain tensiomers after about 100K miles. They are plastic, and plastic tensioners were also used in the VW VR6 engine, and those were known to fail at 100K miles. The SOP for those engines was to replace the tensioners when you replaced the clutch.

It appears some have had the tensioners replaced on the 4.2 engine with even less than 100K miles. Now that these cars are approaching this mileage, I expect we will see a few more of them documented here.

I'm sure you know to do a search-- if not, here's one result for you

Spoke with an Audi Tech, 3 S4's @ 60K-70K recently repaired for the cam chain tension FYI

Default Have a bit over 100k on my avant, 90k of it mine...

have had only minor problems; head cover gaskets (as you mentioned), brakes (had to replace rear discs due to premature inner pad wear from overtightened parking brake cable - have no idea where that came from) and replaced driver side window regulator at about 70k. My service folks aren't too concerned about cam chain and tensioners even with green light to replace when appropriate.
